Chicago Elite League - Week V Recap and Updated Standings and Game Schedule
March 19, 2008 - Chicago, IL

Below is a recap of last week’s games as well as the updated standings game schedule. Week V's photo gallery is also posted. Please contact Chicago Indoor Sports with any questions. See you at 6:30 on Wednesday! Remember, we ask that you stick around for the whole night and bring your fans. No one knows who will go home a champion or what player will be awarded the Elite League Golden Boot, but I promise, every player will be going home with something.

Game #1: Dempsey 1 – 3 Drogba

What was anticipated by many to be the game of the night didn’t quite live up to the expectations – at least not when you look at the final score. Both teams had plenty of opportunities providing for a lot of action, but Dempsey was unable to convert on much of anything, allowing Drogba pull away and come out of this one with an easy 3 points.

The game looked promising at the start but watching Dempsey miss one chance after another got pretty old. It wasn’t even Giovanni Esparza’s play in goal for Drogba – though he played well, Dempsey had trouble getting even the easiest opportunities on net. The first goal was scored by Luis Jimenez who was fed a great ball by Brandon Ramirez. Drogba put up 3 goals before Dempsey’s Clemente Chaidoz was able to convert on one of his many opportunities. This one finished up with a 3-1 tally in Drogba’s favor.

Game #2: Robinho 5 – 3 Ribery

In the second match of the night Robinho took on Ribery. Though not many thought this match-up would amount to much, Ribery put forth a valiant effort – keeping it relatively close (“relatively” being the operative word here). Young Jose Valdez made a strong statement by picking up a hat-trick to open up this game. Valdez looked great and Robinho will look to him to continue his strong play in the last week before the championship.

Ribery was aggressive in their pressure on the Robinhpo defense and it was just a matter of time before they earned a goal because of it. Not long after, they scored a 2nd goal which brought them within 1 at 3-2. But the giant wasn’t going to be taken down in this one. They responded by netting 2 more goals and the game ended with the Yellow on top, 5-3.

Game #3: Zlatan 2 – 7 Ronaldo

Salvador Martinez stole the show in this one scoring 4 goals and assisting on another – Ronaldo is hoping he can keep his strong play going into the Championship because they’ll be hurting with the absence of Cody Wilkins.

Ronaldo earned an easy victory while Zlatan sat back and let Ronaldo take advantage of all kinds of mistakes. Let’s hope Team Zlatan is saving the best for last as they look to make some kind of a run in the playoffs.

Game #4: Robinho 5 – 0 Dempsey

A physical game right off the bat led to a foul just outside the box. Wilmer Moreno stepped up and placed it into the upper left corner only to see his goal called back for not setting a still ball. Ten minutes into and the game is still locked at 0-0. It looked as thought Clemente Chaidoz was about to crack it open when he took several nice shots only to see each miss by inches. On the other end Alejandro Sanchez thwarted some great offensive play but they finally broke through with a strong solo effort by Emilio Calvillo. Stealing the ball at midfield, Calvillo danced around a few players before he found himself one on one with the keeper and poked the ball in to the upper left corner.

That opened up the flood gates. If not for stellar keeping from Sanchez, this one would have been much worse. It was 5-0 with five minutes left to go, in which Dempsey came on strong but could muster nothing of importance. Once again, Yellow showed why they are still unbeaten and the strong favorite to take home the prize.

Game #5: Drogba 10 – 3 Zlatan

Drogba took Zlatan by the neck and never let go. Opening up with an early Luis Jimenez goal (which he went on to score 4 more of!). The quiet Jimenez has played well all season and we’ll look for him to make a big impact in the final week. As for this game in particular: Zlatan = helpless and hopeless…

Game #6: Ronaldo 2 – 1 Ribery

A great night cap and segway into the final week. This game started with the first pk of the season. Ribery’s Christian Haro netted it easily to put Ribery up 1-0. Eric “The Fish” Salinas earned a well-deserved goal off a scramble in the box to even up the score in this one. The game went on with both teams fighting hard. It looked as thought this one was going to end as a draw but with time winding down The Fish struck again and but the all blacks ahead 2-1 and secured the victory.
